Reduce Moving Stress with This Family Pre-Move Checklist

Moving can be exciting. Moving your entire family, however, can be exciting and stressful.

Moving everything can be one of the most difficult and daunting things you'll ever do. But it's certainly not impossible.

The key to this process is planning! Make sure you plan as much as you can in advance. This will help ease the transition as well as make the actual day of the move less stressful. First thing is first. Make sure you ease the stress for your children.

Break the news early. Letting your children know in advance that they'll be moving will give them time to emotionally adjust to the transition. Giving them time to say goodbye to friends and get excited about making new ones is very important. Also remember to look into extracurricular activities in your new location early. Sports and clubs can fill up early; you don’t want your child left out of their favorite activity when it can be a crucial step in making new connections for them. Also remember to have them involved in the moving process, make it a game! Make it fun and exciting to help you pack or decide how their new room will be decorated. Having them involved physically will help their emotional transition as well.

When it comes to your own local services you need to be thorough and proactive when switching them. Local memberships and bank accounts, for example, should be given at least a month's notice before cancellation. This will avoid any unnecessary charges. Checking out websites that have consumer reviews such as Citysearch, Angie’s List or Yelp is a great way to research new establishments to become a part of.
